Front of House

The building which now houses The Rosewood Café was said to be built in 1897 on the corner of Water and Fifth Street in Kaslo. Estimated cost was approximately $900.00 to then owner, Duncan McPhail. The structure changed hands many times and housed businesses such as Dominion Permanent Loan Co. Toronto, from 1904 to 1921.

Alfred Fournier resided upstairs during this period. Occupying the residence starting in 1921, Clarence J. Garrett purchased and occupied the building until 1923 when Frederick E. Archer (many time Mayor of Kaslo) took possession. The building was then moved in 1923 to the site where it sits today at the top of Front Street.

The building was renovated around 1992 to house a cappuccino bar, bookstore and bed & breakfast. Owners Sara and Darcy Pommier eventually leased the 38 seat space to now owners Chef Grant McKenzie and his wife P.J. With the closing of the bookstore in 1996, The Rosewood Café expanded, renovated and has not looked back since the opening in December of 1994.
